More than 320 people attended the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Power Leadership Breakfast, Jan. 13 at Collin College’s Plano Campus Living Legends Conference Center.

The breakfast program, which featured multiple speakers, musical performances, and scholarship awards, reflected this year’s theme of “I can. You can. We can. Plesa (District 70), and a proclamation from the city of Plano delivered by Mayor John B. Muns.

The event honored the following students and community members:

  • Jaison Williams received the Ada Simmons scholarship, named for a local leader who has long served on the MLK Breakfast Committee, North Texas Jobcorps, the McKinney Community Development Block Grant, and other endeavors.
  • Tempest Varner received the Pearls of Service Scholarship sponsored by the Chi Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, which was presented by AKA President Tamme Gaddis.
