Students interact with professor

On Wednesday Oct. 4, Collin College Frisco Campus held its Rockin’ the Ridge event for the 20th year. This event takes place on the first Wednesday of October and highlights much of what Frisco Campus has to offer to students, hence the name “Rockin’ the Ridge” which references the former name of the campus, “Preston Ridge.”

This year’s Rockin’ the Ridge featured all sorts of fun activities for students, staff, and faculty to enjoy including rock climbing, mini golf, a 360-degree photobooth, bull riding, and even a “cosmic tunnel” which was an enjoyable, yet slightly disorienting spinning tunnel.

One of the most essential features of this event was the chance for students to visit different student organizations and clubs to learn more about them.

“Joining a club, you get to meet a lot of like-minded people, have a good time, meet regularly,” said Caleb Wilder, president of Collin Organized Geek Society (COGS). “It’s just good for your soul.”

Events such as Rockin’ the Ridge also allow students the critical opportunity to connect with staff and faculty outside the classroom in a relaxed environment where they are not worried about grades or other school-related stressors.

Tracey McKenzie is a sociology professor at Collin College and event planner of Rockin’ the Ridge.

“It just gives us a chance to connect, have fun, celebrate our campus, and really feel like we have a campus culture that welcomes and appreciates students,” said McKenzie, who has attended this event every single year.

Let’s hear what some students attending the event had to say about the significance of Rockin' the Ridge: “Why do you think Rockin’ the Ridge is important for our school?”

“It’s hard to make friends in college, especially community college, so I think events like this help.” – Chloe, a student pursuing a degree in radiology.

“It’s good to meet new people, make friends, and a break from studies.” – Mannal, a student pursuing a degree in business.

“How many of us would have done rock climbing on the usual? It’s a new experience. You get to socialize, go out and meet new people” – Sabeen, a student pursuing a degree in business.

“Just being able to socialize and talk with friends and professors outside class.” – Ryan, a student pursuing a degree in exercise science.

“It’s definitely really good for socializing. Doing clubs and events like this is a good way to reach out to people and meet them.” – Charlotte, a student pursuing a degree in cybersecurity and member of COGS.

It’s clear that everyone who attended had a blast at this year’s Rockin’ the Ridge. Loud music was heard, free food was eaten, unique experiences were had, and new friends were made. Collin College looks forward to seeing you again next year on the first Wednesday of October!
