Election Signs

Sign Posting Guidelines

Collin College is pleased to serve as a polling location for many elections held in Collin County. The Collin College Board of Trustees has established local policies related to election activity on the college’s campuses.

The following summary related to election signs has been developed specifically as a convenience for candidates who wish to post signs or have a presence on our campuses during election periods.

  • For the purposes of the policy, “sign” shall be defined as a billboard, decal, notice, placard, poster, banner, or any kind of hand-held sign; “posting” shall be defined as any means used for displaying a sign.
  • Election campaign signs shall be limited to five signs per candidate at each Collin College polling site, at a location designated by the appropriate campus provost and identified by signage marked “Designated Political Sign Area,” during the period of early voting and on Election Day when the campus is a voting site.
  • Such signs are limited to sizes not to exceed 2’ x 2’ and must be either hand-held or staked into the ground.
  • T-posts are not allowed.
  • In accordance with the Texas Election Code Section 61.003, electioneering includes the posting, using, or distributing political signs or literature. During the time a polling place is open for voting, a person may not electioneer for or against any candidate, measure, or political party in or within 100 feet of an outside door through which a voter may enter the building or structure in which the polling location is located.

The college has established the following regulations to implement the policy:

  • The total of five signs per candidate is the limit regardless of whether the signs are from the candidate’s campaign, a political action committee, or other group.
  • A sign that endorses multiple candidates is counted as one of the five signs for each candidate.
  • Issues-based campaign signs are limited to three (3) signs per political action committee (PAC) per issue, either supporting or opposing the issue.
  • Tents, awnings, tables, or shelters are not permitted in common outdoors on college district property as defined in policy
  • Megaphones are not permitted in outdoor areas of college property.
  • All electioneering must comply with applicable election laws.
  • Authorized areas for signs for each campus are reflected on the attached maps.
  • Signs may be posted no earlier than 24 hours before the Early Voting period begins and must be removed no later than 24 hours after voting ends on Election Day.
  • Our policies apply to Collin College property. If you are unsure if an area is on Collin College property, please ask the contact personnel listed on this document page.

* Please note that the college will remove any election signage installed outside the designated areas or in excess of the five signs allowed and hold them for five (5) days for retrieval by the campaign. After that, the signs will be discarded.
