What We Offer

The Early Childhood Educator program at Collin College is dedicated to cultivating passionate and skilled professionals who are committed to the holistic development and well-being of children from birth to age 8. Our goal is to equip our students with the essential knowledge, practical skills, and advocacy techniques necessary to excel in various early childhood and care settings. Through a comprehensive developmental approach, we emphasize the importance of fostering physical, social, emotional, and cognitive growth in young children, ensuring they are well-prepared for their future educational journeys. By integrating hands-on field experiences and promoting nurturing, inclusive environments, we empower our graduates to make a meaningful and lasting impact in the lives of children and their families.

Guiding Principles

Based on our mission statement and vision, as well as National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) standards, the following guiding principles govern our program:

    1. Learning should be active, research-based, built upon solid theoretical foundations, and provide practice in skill-building and application of principles (NAEYC Standards 1 & 4).
    2. Students should gain and integrate the following understandings and skills into their practice as teachers: how children grow and develop; the role of families and the community in children’s development and learning; the use of developmentally appropriate assessment in supporting children’s growth and learning; and the ability to advocate effectively on behalf of young children (NAEYC Standards 2,3, & 4).
    3. Faculty will utilize and demonstrate innovative and research-based teaching practices that are student-centered; value active learning, diversity, collaboration, nurturance and professionalism; use assessment tools that promote student growth and change; and promote life-long learning (NAEYC Standards 4 & 5).

Conceptual Framework

The conceptual framework for Collin College’s Early Childhood Education program centers on preparing students to become passionate, skilled professionals who are dedicated to the holistic development and well-being of children from birth to age 8. Rooted in the core values of the college — learning, service and involvement, creativity and innovation, academic excellence, dignity and respect, and integrity — this framework emphasizes the importance of fostering developmentally appropriate practices that support the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social growth of young children. It integrates a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, advocating for culturally competent and inclusive educational environments that respect the unique needs of all children. The framework also emphasizes advocacy and leadership, preparing graduates to advocate for children and families, engage with communities, and lead in shaping policies and practices that benefit the field of early childhood education. Through evidence-based practices, community partnerships, and a commitment to lifelong learning, the program strives to ensure that graduates not only meet national professional standards but also contribute meaningfully to their communities and the broader field. This approach distinguishes Collin College’s Early Childhood Education program by its focus on ethical practice, leadership, and community engagement, providing a foundation for students to thrive as educators and advocates for change.
