Overview
The Basic Peace Officer (BPO) Academy is a training program certified by the Texas
Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). Completion of the Basic Peace Officer Course
(BCOP) is required in order to be licensed and hired as a Peace Officer in Texas.

Apply
Academy application is available 180 days prior to start date.
To apply to the Basic Peace Officer Academy:
- You must be a U.S. citizen.
- You must be at least 21 years old.
- You must have a high school diploma or GED.
- You must have a clear criminal record and be able to pass a comprehensive background check.
- Applicants must also complete a personal interview, physical, psychological, and drug screen examine.
- All candidates must meet TCOLE licensing requirements to attend the Academy.
Agency sponsored individuals have priority enrollment. Individuals who are not sponsored by an agency must apply to the Program Coordinator for admittance.

Class Information
- The Basic Peace Officer Course (BPOC) is 768 hours.
- Normal class hours for the full-time program is Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Cost for the Basic Peace Officer Academy is $2,500
- Class space is limited to 32 students for both programs.*
*Successful completion of this course makes the student eligible for enrollment in an Advanced Basic Peace Officer supplemental course that is 80 hours.
