Collin College to Offer a Variety of Summer Camps

March 23, 2023 Collin College will offer a variety of camps this summer. Middle school and high school students can select camps ranging from automotive to robotics, and certain subjects are repeated at multiple campuses. This year the college is also offering an Adult Summer Art Camp. The following camps, listed by start date, will be held in June and July and are located on the colleges campuses in Allen, Farmersville, Frisco, McKinney, Plano, and Wylie. Nurse Camp/Health Science Investigation Camp
Monday-Wednesday, June5-7,9a.m.-Noon
McKinney Campus, 2200 W. University Dr., McKinney

This camp is for sevenththrough 12thgrade students who are interested in learning more about the health care field. Offering unique opportunities for participants, this camp will provide hands-on experience including assisting medical personnel during simulations and sensory activities, utilizing industry-standard equipment, and participating in demonstrations. Electronics Camp

This camp is for eighth and nineth grade students who are interested in basics of electronics. From learning to solder, to building small electronic devices, this camp will provide hands-on experience in electronics. This camp is sponsored by the Engineering Technology Department. Nature Explorers Camp
Monday-Thursday, June 5-15, 9 a.m.-Noon
Farmersville Campus, 501 S. Collin Parkway, Farmersville

Students in grades six-eight will engage in an eight-day hands-on, field-based experience to learn how to bring nature home. Campers will learn about habitat preservation and stewardship while exploring concepts in geoscience, native plants, agriculture, and animals; such as, mammals, birds, insects, and more. ASL Summer Camp 1
Monday-Friday, June 5-16, 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m.
Plano Campus, 2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway, Plano

The ASL Summer Camp is a fun, interactive experience that takes place in person on the Plano Campus and introduces all aspects of American Sign Language (ASL). In this camp, you will learn nearly 700 manual signs and essential vocabulary, the finger-spelling alphabet, and views of Deaf culture/disability awareness. Our Deaf staff will help you learn to use American Sign Language for a variety of situations, and the camp will end in a Deaf event where we will provide pizza and drinks. Robotics Camp

Students in grades seven-10 will stimulate their minds and unleash their creativity in this camp. This is a hands-on, minds-on camp. The camp includes three daily sessions devoted to robotics. The cost is $100 and includes supplies and snacks. If you have questions, call 972.549.6490.

Creative Writing Camp

Collin College Wylie Campus staff and faculty are excited to offer our first Teen Summer Creative Writing Camp. Join us to learn about canonical and contemporary poets and writers while creating your own poems and short fiction. The camp will introduce students ages 14-18 to a variety of writing genres, techniques, and styles such as microfiction, metered poetry, free verse, ekphrastic poetry, flash fiction, and narrative poetry. Each student will learn to write stories and poems and have the opportunity to read published writers and poets work and speak remotely with them about their writing process. Guest speakers will share tips and tricks for breaking into the profession. The cost is $150 and includes supplies, a T-shirt, and snacks. The camp will culminate with a public reading reception, showcasing the work participants have created throughout the week. Automation Camp

Criminal Justice Camp

This camp is open to students in grades nine-12. Want to learn how the criminal justice system works from experts in the field? Join Collin College this summer for a criminal justice camp. Campers will learn about the roles and careers within the police, courts, and the correctional system. Crime scene investigations will also be highlighted with campers getting some hands-on forensic experience. Many guest speakers from various criminal justice agencies will be there to personally share their stories and careers with campers. Be a part of this exciting camp. CADD Camp Computer Aided Drafting & Design

Photography Camp
Monday-Friday, June 19-23, 9 a.m.-Noon

Join Collin Colleges faculty and staff for a week of immersion into the art of photography. During the camp, students will explore the studio, where they each will have a professional quality studio portrait made and the opportunity to photograph using professional lighting equipment. Students will also take photos on campus with instructors, make their own photographic prints in the darkroom, and learn the basics of photography and photographic software, such as Adobe Photoshop. Each student will also create their own original T-shirts using Cyanotype material.

The Collin College Creative Writing Camp will allow seventh- and eighth-grade students to spend five days honing their creative writing skills in workshops focused on various styles such as poetry, flash fiction, and memoir. Instructors include Collin College full-time faculty members who are also published writers. The week ends with a celebratory open mic for students to share their creative works with each other and invited friends and family. The cost of the camp is $175, and that includes all materials. Texas All-Star Jazz Camp
Monday-Friday, June 26-30, 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. (Evening concerts at 7 p.m.)

The Texas All-Star Jazz Camp is a week-long immersive jazz program offering aspiring young musicians (ages 13 and older) the opportunity to perform music with their peers and learn from an outstanding faculty of professional musicians and educators in a fun, engaging, and supportive environment. Our curriculum includes daily ensemble rehearsals, master classes, and workshops for all skill levels in jazz improvisation and jazz theory. Students (along with their families and friends) are also invited to attend evening concerts featuring our faculty big band and a special guest artist. The week culminates in a Student Showcase concert held on Friday. Tuition is $300 and includes a camp T-shirt and tickets to all evening concerts. Daily lunch is available for an additional $50, or campers may bring their own. A limited number of need-based and performance-based scholarships are available on a case-by-case basis. Culinary, Pastry, and Hospitality Camp
Monday-Friday, June 26-30 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

This camp is open to students in grades nine-12. Students will be given recipes to execute according to the theme of the cuisine of the day. Campers will be able to consume a portion of their food while packaging the remaining portions to take with them. This is a great opportunity for students to get their first exposure to what scratch cooking is in addition to being exposed to new cuisines. It will also be a great first-hand experience to see how a commercial kitchen operates and where the behind-the-scenes magic really happens. Refinisher Paint Camp
Monday-Wednesday, June 26-28, 8 a.m.-Noon
Technical Campus, 2550 Bending Branch Way, Allen

This camp is open to participants entering ninth through 12th grades. Participants explore how to prepare a panel to refinish, apply waterborne paint technology, and create custom paint designs using fine-line tape. Campers will learn the fundamentals of automotive refinishing as well as the safety aspects. Campers will create their own design and take home a custom-designed miniature hood. Campers will encounter dust, chemicals, and paint fumes. Due to the nature of the environment, those with dust and allergen sensitivities may be susceptible to acute respiratory reactions. Air-supplied respirators, 3M particulate respirators, and all other safety equipment will be provided. Students will also receive a camp T-shirt. The cost is $175. Animation and Game Art Camp

Students in grades nine-12 will learn how to write, design, and tell a story through storyboarding and animation technology by creating an animatic. Students should bring their imagination and ideas to this camp. No previous drawing skills are required. The cost is $150 per camper and includes hands-on instruction from Collin College faculty. Automotive Exploration Camp

Are you ready to learn about the exciting opportunities in the automotive industry? This camp is open to participants entering grades ninth through 12th grades. Participants explore the basic function, maintenance and light repair of automobiles related to vehicle ownership as well as safety related to maintaining a vehicle, all on actual vehicles the college will supply. Participants will encounter fluids and chemicals, fumes, and brake dust. Due to the nature of the environment, those with sensitivities may be susceptible to reactions such as respiratory and on the skin. Safety glasses, gloves and other safety equipment will be provided by the college. Students will also receive a camp T-shirt. The cost is $150. TeenSummerArt Camp

The Young Artist Masters Camp is excited to host amazing local artists/educators for a weeklong summer art camp at Collin College. Join us to learn about historical and contemporary master artists while creating your own studies investigating the theme, Character Who Am I? A variety of techniques, mediums, and compositions will be explored in media-specific studios to help students find their artistic voices. Instructors include Alana Balch from Allen ISD, Suzy Jones from ArtCentre of Plano, and Angel Dillon from Collin College. Students entering sixth-12th grade are welcome. Summer Dance Festival

The Collin Summer Dance Festival is a weeklong dance intensive welcoming beginning through advanced dancers (ages 14-adult). Classes include modern, ballet, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, tap, swing, musical theatre, hip hop, improvisation, and more. The registration fee is $150 through May 31 and $175 after that date. Crime Scene Investigation Camp

Learn hands-on forensic investigation techniques at the Crime Scene Investigation summer camp. Experts in criminal justice take participants through exercises that apply forensic methods to prepare crime scenes. Participants learn proper search procedures, as well as identification, documentation, preservation, and collection of crime scene evidence including fingerprints, DNA, blood, and shoe and tire impressions. Mock crime scene activities and evidence are age appropriate and challenging. Campers entering grades nine-12 are eligible to attend. The Finance Is Fun! summer camp is a dynamic, interactive, in-person experience facilitated by Dr. Kevin Suber, a Collin College professor in the Banking and Financial Services program. In this camp, students will learn financial basics that assist them with personal finance skills. The Finance is Fun! day camp will also provide guest speakers from the financial industry from whom students will learn about careers in the finance and banking industries. Students will also discover how finances, investing, taxes, and budgets are essential to many careers. The camp is open to students 14-18 years of age.
