Collin College student Yassin Mudawi has been selected as a 2024 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar and will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
The Leaders of Promise Scholarship, sponsored by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation,
recognizes 210 Phi Theta Kappa members helping them defray educational expenses while
enrolled in associate degree programs. Phi Theta Kappa is an honor society recognizing
the academic achievement of students at associate degree-granting colleges. Scholars
are encouraged to assume leadership roles by participating in society programs and
are selected based on scholastic achievement, community service, and leadership potential.
Nearly 1,500 applications were received.
Mudawi, a Plano Campus student who resides in Allen, plans to transfer to a four-year
institution to pursue a double major in Cognitive Science and Computer Science. His
end goal is to earn a doctoral degree.
“This scholarship is a unique opportunity for dedicated students, and I just couldn’t
let it pass me by,” he said. “This validates that we should always aim high and shoot
our shot at great possibilities. I’m glad I did because I received this amazing reward.”
Mudawi looks forward to continuing his undergraduate research for Collin College,
Yale University, and other higher educational institutions while participating in
organizations including Student Government Association, Astronomy Club, and Phi Theta
Kappa.
Jane Hale Hopkins, president of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, emphasized the
organization’s commitment to supporting exceptional community college students.
“We are proud to partner with Phi Theta Kappa to make it possible for more deserving
students to achieve their educational goals and support tomorrow’s global community
leaders,” she said.”
The funds provided by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation not only aid college completion
but also give students the opportunity to engage in society programs and develop leadership
skills to become future leaders in their communities.
“Research shows that Phi Theta Kappa members are four times more likely to complete
a college degree than their peers,” Dr. Monica Marlowe, executive director of the
Phi Theta Kappa Foundation, said. “The Leaders of Promise Scholarships recognize students
for what they have achieved already and assure that financial need isn’t an obstacle
to achieving their academic goals.”
Collin College serves more than 58,000 credit and continuing education students annually
and offers more than 200 degrees and certificates, including a Bachelor of Science
in Nursing (BSN), a Bachelor of Applied Technology (BAT) in Cybersecurity, a Bachelor
of Applied Science (BAS) in Construction Management, and a new Bachelor of Applied
