Explore the journey from book to the silver screen with this year’s Auteur Film Series. This year’s slate of films opens with The Hate U Give at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19 at the Plano Campus Living Legends Conference Center. The screening and subsequent panel discussion are free and open to the public.

The Hate U Give tells the story of a teenager who witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood friend and must find her voice and stand up for what is right. The 2018 film is being presented in partnership with the Black American Awareness Committee and the Banned Books Week Committee.

This year’s film series theme, “Film Adaptation: From Page to Screen,” includes a selection of works that transitioned from beloved books to the big screen. Are books inherently better than their filmic versions, or does each medium exist as its own text and offer its own strengths and limits?

The Auteur Film Series presents classic, foreign, and independent films with brief educational introductions before the screenings and faculty-led panel discussions afterward. The film series is designed to challenge the viewer’s intellect and encourage conversations that engage students in civil discourse.

The films will all be shown at 7 p.m. Doors open 30 minutes before each film begins, and seating is limited. Some material may not be suitable for all audiences.
