Collin Cougar

Program Overview

  • Eligible homeschool students can supplement their high school coursework with courses at Collin College. Dual Credit courses are college courses that can be used to simultaneously earn high school and college credit for the same course.
  • We consider a student homeschooled if their parent or guardian is the one responsible for determining high school requirements and is the one signing and issuing the high school transcript. Students cannot be classified as homeschooled if they are enrolled in a high school program (either online or in-person) that issues their high school transcript. Please see our special admit webpage.
  • Homeschool students will work with their homeschool administrator (parent/guardian) to enroll at Collin College. We have dedicated dual credit staff to help families through the process.
  • Students and parents can review the courses available to them in the Collin College catalog, and the online schedule once published each term.
  • Students will take dual credit courses at the campus of their choice or online.

Age-related Requirements

New Dual Credit Homeschool Requirement Update HB3041

Due to recent changes to the homeschool eligibility requirements in response to the passage of HB 3041 by the Texas Legislature, homeschool students under the age of 16 will follow a different set of procedures for enrollment at Collin College.

Homeschool students under 16 will be considered entering freshman students and must take the TSIA to establish college readiness or provide proof of an exemption to the TSIA to enroll in concurrent courses that require college readiness. Visit the TSI Applicability and Exemptions page for a list of acceptable exemptions.

Under this recent change, homeschool students under the age of 16, by the start of courses, will only be considered concurrent students. Courses will still be listed on your Collin College transcript, and these courses will count toward your attempted and/or completed hours. Homeschool students under the age of 16 by the start of courses should take the TSIA and submit the Under 16 Homeschool Permission Form.

Required steps for affected students:
  • Become TSIA complete for desired classes (if student has not already taken the TSIA or provided an exemption)
  • Submit the new permission form

Additional Age-related Requirements

  • At minimum, students must have completed the 8th grade and be in 9th grade or higher to enroll in courses.
  • Students under age 14 must meet with a Dual Credit team members for an initial interview
  • Students under age 14 must also meet with the Workforce Department Director or Academic Associate Dean for enrolling, if needed.

Homeschool FAQs

We consider a student homeschooled if their parent or guardian is the one responsible for determining high school requirements and is the one signing and issuing the high school transcript. Students who are attending an online program that issues the high school transcript are not considered homeschooled. If we do not have a partnership with the online program, students can apply as a Special Admit student.
Homeschool dual credit students pay tuition based on their residency, which is calculated based on their admissions application. If you believe your residency classification should be updated, please contact our office, so we can assist you.

Homeschool students under the age of 16 must take the TSIA2 to establish college readiness or provide proof of an exemption to enroll in courses that require college readiness. Visit the TSI Applicability and Exemptions page for a list of acceptable exemptions.

Homeschool students age 16 or holder are exempt from the TSIA2 until they have earned 15 credit hours. Students who have earned 15 credit hours are required to take the TSIA2 or provide proof of exemption if they have not already successfully completed a college-level course in ELAR and/or MATH.

Students are encouraged to apply and complete all required enrollment steps early to ensure the best pick of classes and a smooth enrollment process. Fall enrollment generally starts in late April, and Spring enrollment generally starts in late October. Students should be enrolled by the Friday before the semester begins. For more detailed dates, please visit our Collin College calendars.

Our dual credit students typically take courses in the Core Curriculum for a General Associate of Arts or Associate of Science. These courses are recommended for students who plan to transfer to a 4 year college/university.

In the first semester, we typically recommend that students start with one course such as EDUC 1300 Learning Framework or SPCH 1311 Introduction to Speech Communication.

Students can also choose to take courses in a Workforce Program, or a foreign language course (Ex. SPAN, FREN, ARAB).

The public course schedule is typically released within two weeks prior to semester enrollment.

Collin College does not determine high school graduation requirements. Students will need to work with their homeschool administrator (parent/guardian) to determine what courses they need to complete. The homeschool administrator can consult resources such as the Texas Education Agency (TEA) or a homeschool co-op in your area for assistance.

If transferring from a school, we will need a letter of withdrawal from the school that includes your last date of attendance before you will be considered/classified as a homeschool student. Please reach out to our office, so we can assist you with this transition.
